A grand event was held Thursday, 5 May, at the Yacht Club of Greece (YCG) to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the \u201cSpetses Classic Yacht Regatta\u201d, which has become one of the most notable classic yacht races internationally.
\r\nThe commemorative race featuring classic and traditional boats \u2013 the Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta 2022 (SCYR), to be held 23-26 June, will see the beautiful island in the Argosaronic Gulf, and particularly the strip of water separating Spetses from the shores of the Peloponnese, deluged by classic yachts, traditional work boats, open boats, family dinghies and some of the most famous classic yachts from Greece and abroad.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe president of the SCYR 2022 Organising Committee and member of the YCG Board of Directors, Liza Stathatou, mentioned some of the milestones of the event from 2012 to the present, including the continuing addition of new boat categories. In 2012, the category of \u201cTraditional Lateens\u201d was added; in 2015, the \u201cContemporary Classics\u201d; in 2017, the \u201cTraditional Dinghies\u201d; and in 2016, the \u201cSpirit of Tradition\u201d category expanded the event to include some special participants. Also in 2014, a special award was introduced in \u201cRecognition of a Life\u2019s Work in Wooden Boat-building\u201d; in 2015, came the Concours d\u2019Elegance prize, sponsored by the Poseidonion Grand Hotel; while more than 30 awards have been given for \u201cBest Showing\u201d to boats in all classes. Some of the highlights in the regatta’s history included the participation of 10 Olympic champion sailors for the first time in Greek water sports in 2013, and the recognition earned for the event\u2019s contribution to sustainability with the \u201cSailors for the Sea Gold Level Clean Regattas\u201d certification granted in 2019.
\r\nThe anniversary event was also honoured by the attendance of Tourism Deputy Minister Sofia Zacharaki and Sports Deputy Minister Lefteris Avgenakis.
