In perpetuating the legacy of the original V.S.O.P – specially conceived by Hennessy in 1817 for the English Prince Regent, who would become George IV – the objective of the Hennessy master blenders has always been to create a complete and harmonious blend: the definitive expression of a perfectly balanced cognac. Based on a selection of firmly structured eaux-de-vie, aged largely in partially used barrels in order to take on subtle levels of oak tannins, this highly characterful cognac reveals balanced aromas of light tobacco, fresh vanilla and toasty notes, all coming together with a seamless perfection.
With is beautifully rounded style, Hennessy V.S.O.P is the perfect example of a completely harmonious cognac.
The maturation of Hennessy V.S.O.P centres on the expertly judged use of barrels of different ages. This complex aging regime produces a highly expressive, complete and harmonious cognac. The key element of the maturation involves partially used barrels, which have held between two and four eaux-de-vie previously. Just a small proportion of the eaux-de-vie are aged in new barrels, with the aim of taking on their wonderful mahogany colour, a delicate smoky tone, and above all a great consistency of character. Finally, some older barrels are used to bring an extra level of elegance and finesse to the finished blend, adding a livelier note of subtle spice.
It is this perfect combination that results in the great freshness and balance of V.S.O.P.
Creating the blend requires expert judgment in balancing all the various characteristics derived from the respective styles of maturation. The Master Blender and his Tasting Committee make a careful selection from all the eaux-de-vie reserved for the V.S.O.P blend, to choose those displaying the greatest balance. In this way they put together a cognac of great character, poised and composed, that achieves a complete harmony of power and finesse. And so, Hennessy V.S.O.P displays balanced aromas of light tobacco, fresh vanilla and toasty notes, all coming together perfectly within its great richness of texture.
Its wonderful clarity and vibrant shades of mahogany are a mark of this cognac’s fine balance.
Aromas of spice mingle with very subtle notes of vanilla and light tobacco. Toasty wood notes are imparted by its long and steady maturation in barrels.
Echoing the balanced and harmonious character of the nose, it shows a well-structured palate, with the mellow texture of the oldest eaux-de-vie perfectly balancing the vitality of the youngest. Subtle notes of brown sugar and candied fruits are complemented by touches of light spice. As complete as it is harmonious, this overall balance lends itself to a wide range of uses, in a long drink or cocktail, and enhanced with a suggestion of citrus of ginger.
